Bicycles are everywhere in Holland, especially so in Amsterdam. There are bike lanes everywhere, some bigger than the driving lanes. You've got to keep an eye out for them too, they don't stop and they fly by you at top speeds.
The train ride was great, what a fantastic way to see the Dutch countryside. Would you believe I didn't take a single windmill picture? They were kinda flying by a little too quickly past the train window. Eamonn fell asleep on his daddy's shoulder about 45 minutes from the city. Once we got to our station, our hotel was literally across the canal. Unfortunately, they had a strict no checking in before 2pm policy, so we went for a little walk along the canals.
We got back about 15 minutes after 2, but they still wouldn't let us check in because housekeeping hadn't cleared the room yet. At this point Eamonn was getting fairly cranky, he wanted to crawl around and be free of his stroller, and who could blame him? They finally ended up giving us another room so we could go up and relax a bit. James took this photo of the view from our window at night. The big building is the train station:
We were thrilled to discover the canal bus - it's absolutely brilliant! You get a ticket for 24 hours, and you can hop on and off whenever and wherever you please. We did a lot of boat hopping! More boat pics to come, here's the first:
Amsterdam also has a fantastic array of restaurants. This night we decided to try an Argentinian steak house. The empanadas were melt-in-your-mouth, as were the ribs and flank steak. I gave Eamonn rib bones to chew on, he thought that was pretty cool. If he was a little older, he'd probably be making dog noises!
